The use of natural and good quality materials in design is essential. These materials form the backbone of the garden. In far too many cases inferior materials are used to fit a project into a budget so the landscaping firm can still complete the project and make a healthy profit. In these cases it would be far better to carry out the process in stages rather than all at once for a quick result that will require overhaul in years to come. We believe that the materials used are in tandem with the design and should improve with the garden as it evolves.

Ethics and environmental issues:

At Tierra Designs we are aware of the impact we as a landscape construction company are having on the changing environment. No matter what materials are used they all have an effect one way or another on the world. By careful choice of materials we aim to minimise that effect. The points listed below give an indication of how we can reduce detrimental effects.

- Using recycled materials where possible
- Minimising waste removal and therefore landfill
- Keeping spaces green
- Reducing the use of residual pesticides and fertilisers
- Sourcing materials from ethically sound sites
- Where possible sourcing materials that are indigenous to the country they are to be used in

We source directly from two quarries in Yorkshire and a slate quarry in Cornwall. Check out types of stone at Silverlands.
